Energy storage hit another record year in 2022, adding 16 GW / 35 GWh, up 68% from 2021. Several markets announced ambitious energy storage targets totaling more than 130 GW by 2030.
Flow batteries are superior to lithium ion
"Flow batteries are just basically better for utility purposes than lithium-ion" says energy sector lawyer Morten Lund, a partner at Stoel Rives. "It’s a superior technology in terms of performance, reliability and longevity, while inferior round-trip efficiency to lithium. Flow batteries are generally at about 75% versus 90%+ for lithium, as a ballpark figure." This matters less when you figure in capital and replacement costs.
